James Sergeant
Apprentice Planner and Technical Support
At work
James works as an apprentice planner and technical support, providing paraplanning and administrative assistance across a wide range of client matters. His day-to-day responsibilities include preparing financial reports and suitability letters, carrying out fund research, and assisting with risk mapping to ensure advice aligns with client objectives and risk profiles.
While he doesn’t yet have direct client contact, James works closely with advisers to support the advice process, ensuring all recommendations are compliant, well-researched, and clearly presented.
James is working towards the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning (DipPFS) and completes regular CPD to develop both his technical knowledge and professional skills as he progresses towards a client-facing advisory position.
At home
Outside of work, James is passionate about fitness and staying active. He practised martial arts as a child and played rugby for many years, though he’s now more of a keen spectator than a player.
A big Liverpool fan, James is also a bit of a cinephile and has a real love for classic rock. When he’s not watching a match or a film, he enjoys reading, playing chess, and learning Spanish in his spare time.
In the spotlight...
My proudest moment as an IFA was:
I don’t have a single standout moment, but several small achievements – balancing administrative duties, taking on more paraplanning responsibilities, and completing several R0 exams.

The three things I love most about my job are working with people, making a genuine difference in their financial lives, and working in a field I am truly passionate about.
The types of people I enjoy working with are:
There isn’t a singular type of person I enjoy working with most; what excites me about working in financial planning is the sheer variety of people I will get to work with, as no two clients are ever the same.
